Building Focus in Small Children (ages 3-6)

Children aged 3-6 are at a critical stage in developing their focus, attention span, and executive functions—key cognitive processes that form the foundation for self-regulation. On the developmental side, much can be done to nurture these skills. On the behavioral side, it is often difficult to engage a group of young children in structured activities. Yet, such activities are crucial for their growth, as they help develop goal-directed behaviors that are essential for future academic and life success.

This workshop directly addresses these challenges by providing evidence-based strategies that improve children’s ability to focus and self-regulate, enabling teachers to engage children more effectively in learning environments.

Many teachers express frustration with getting young children to stay focused. For example, a teacher from a previous training said, "I was taught a lot about beneficial activities for child development. The problem is, when I offer these activities to the kids, they often start with enthusiasm but then quickly get distracted or give up as soon as something doesn’t work."

We will learn what tools can be used to help the frustrated child, simultaneously involving the rest of group in co-regulation techniques without losing control over the activity.

Workshop Objectives

The workshop aims to:

  • Teach what focus is from a cognitive perspective and what it isn’t.

  • Identify factors that can enhance or hinder focus.

  • Explain the concept of persistence and how it relates to sustained attention.

  • Provide practical evidence based tools for improving children’s ability to focus for longer periods.

  • Help teachers manage frustration and strong emotions that disrupt focus, and offer strategies for getting back on track.

  • Connect these insights to the real-world situations teachers face in their classrooms.

  • Facilitate the discussion of specific classroom challenges and successful approaches, using case studies to explore what worked and why.

One particularly enlightening element of the workshop is revisiting teachers' successful moments through the lens of cognitive knowledge. This new understanding helps teachers recognize why certain strategies worked, enabling them to apply these insights more consistently in the future.

Workshop Structure

Pre-Workshop Preparation:
We gather questions and examples of specific classroom challenges from participants before the workshop. This allows us to tailor the content to address their particular needs and situations.

Workshop Components:

  1. The Science of Focus: Understanding focus and attention development in young children and the factors that affect them.

  2. Evidence-Based Strategies: Practical, research-backed techniques that are proven to enhance children’s ability to stay on task.

  3. Linking Strategies to Classroom Practice: Teachers will reflect on their current strategies, choose two new approaches, and brainstorm how to incorporate them into their routines.

  4. Case Studies and Interactive Discussions: We’ll discuss both successes and struggles that participants have experienced, brainstorming alternative strategies and creating actionable plans.

  5. Follow-up coaching (optional, see “add ons”): we will meet regularly after the workshop testing ideas and solutions in the classroom. The participants will share their experience and receive detailed feedback on how to improve.

The workshop is designed to be highly interactive, continuously connecting the theory to the teachers’ day-to-day experiences in the classroom. It emphasizes practical applications and solutions tailored to the real challenges that teachers face.

Workshop Outcomes

By the end of the workshop, participants will:

  • Have a deeper understanding of the factors that affect focus and the ability to design or adjust activities to promote sustained attention in young children.

  • Adopt evidence-based tools and techniques for both whole-classroom management and individualized approaches for students who need extra help.

  • Brainstorm solutions to specific challenges they encounter and leave with a concrete plan for improving classroom dynamics.

  • Experience an overall improvement in classroom behavior, which can make teaching less stressful and more rewarding.

What Makes This Workshop Unique?

This workshop is grounded in cutting-edge cognitive science and led by PhD-level specialists in child development. The content is peer-reviewed and scientifically sound, but the focus is not just on theory—it’s on practical, hands-on strategies that teachers can implement right away. The approach blends research-backed insights with real-world classroom applications, making it both credible and usable. Additionally, the workshop has been fine-tuned through previous iterations, receiving excellent feedback from past participants.

Add-Ons and Follow-Up Options

We also offer optional follow-up supervision sessions to help reinforce the learning process:

  • Weekly Support Sessions: One-hour sessions, either in person or online, for up to five weeks. These sessions allow teachers to reflect on what they’ve implemented, receive feedback, and make continuous improvements.

  • WhatsApp Coaching: For a more flexible approach, teachers can have short, 15-minute coaching calls during breaks or engage in a group WhatsApp chat to share their situations and receive immediate feedback. This method offers real-time support and enables peer learning.

These follow-up options are highly recommended, as they provide a feedback loop that supports deeper learning. Teachers can test the strategies they’ve learned, receive guidance, and continuously refine their approach.
